The North Dakota State Bar (founded in 1899) has over 1800 members that practice law in North Dakota.

Public Services

       As part of a service to the general public, the State Bar has a number of services available. They include Referral Service and Legal Advice, a Lawyer Directory and Filing a Complaint against a lawyer. In cooperation with other nonprofit organizations, legal aid services are available for those that cannot afford the services of an attorney.

Referral Service and Legal Advice

       The State Bar has a referral program called the LRIS (Lawyer Referral and Information Services). This program provides referrals to clients (who are able to pay) with attorneys that are proficient in that particular client's legal need. For a $30.00 fee, a client is matched with an attorney that is in your community or your choice of city/town and a thirty minute consultation with the referred attorney.

Legal Aid Services

       There are a number of legal aid programs that offer free advice and assist seniors, low income families as well as other citizens of North Dakota. They include Dakota Plains Legal Services and Legal Services of North Dakota.

Lawyer Directory

       The ND State Bar's Lawyer Directory is a user friendly directory available to the public that has a searchable list of attorneys who are members of the State Bar. The directory lists the name, contact information, date admitted to North Dakota State Bar and name of law school attended.

Filing a Complaint

       To file a complaint against an attorney, first read North Dakota Rules for Lawyer Discipline (to see if their are violations of the law and/or grounds for discipline).
