New Mexico State Bar -

The New Mexico State Bar has over 8,500 members who are licensed to practice law in the state of New Mexico (it is unknown how many members practice bankruptcy law). The State Bar started in 1886 when it was still a territory and the frontier was unsettled.

Today, the bar is incorporated under the laws of New Mexico and is governed by a Board of Commissioners who are elected by the members of the New Mexico State Bar.

Public Resources

The State Bar provides a number of services for the general public. They include a referral program, dispute mediation between client and attorney, fee arbitration, an elderly program for seniors and a client/attorney assistance program. All are an important part to the New Mexico community at large and are free for those families and individuals that qualify.

The State also has a database, open to the public, a list of searchable active attorneys. The database lists their names, addresses and phone numbers and most importantly, if the attorney that you are searching has any disciplinary actions.

Filing Bankruptcy

The State bar also has a section that is titled "Filing Bankruptcy in New Mexico" in English and Spanish. Within this section it discusses and defines such bankruptcy related phrases as creditor, debtorand trustee. It also has sections describing Chapter 7 and Chapter 13.

One of the State Bar's on going community program is a "Consumer Debt Workshop". It is no charge to the public and is specifically designed to assist you in your financial situation. An attorney familiar with bankruptcy law will give an hour long presentation on this subject and you can discuss your situation directly afterwards to the speaker. Contact the State Bar for more detailed information at (505) 797-6048.
